Hamilton Heart Attack

I wrote this song in July, 2020 when I was greatly affected by Hamilton and wasn’t sure when I would get to see art that affected me so in theaters again.

Lyrics:

Saw Hamilton, felt like a heart attack
Went to the ER, got myself looked at
Doc told me to take these pills for what was heartburn
But I don’t want to put out the flames for what my heart yearns
Rewind to the moment my heart was set aflame
Angelica made a choice, the selfless choice, to play the game
By the rules, she knew, her fam would prosper if she’d abide
Reached for my popcorn, but the salt was in my eyes

We don’t make sense make our world make more sense with
We we don’t make sense and its just like this whole, whole opportunity to like

We don’t make sense and we’re all covered in Covid
The theaters are closed, and our future looks distorted
We don’t make sense and we’re all covered in Covid
But Hamilton heart attack, Hamilton heart attack,
Gave me something to put my hope in

I believe that art can change the world
But I’m not sure that I think that I think that mine can
I know——that I’ve been changed by art
My heart doesn’t beat the same cause art
And I worry that this flurry of things
That I know affected me
Will stop affecting me
I am afraid to rewatch
Just about
Everything, everything

Hamilton, Portrait of Lady on Fire,
Little Women, Us, Roma, Parasite, Arrival
Call me By Your Name, Your Name, Butterfly Girl
Into the Woods, Interstellar, A Monster Calls
20th Century Woman, Lion, Nocturnal Animals

We don’t make sense and we’re all covered in Covid
The theaters are closed, and our future looks distorted
We don’t make sense and we’re all covered in Covid
But an art cathartic heart attack, an art cathartic heart attack,
Gives me a reason to keep on going

I believe that art can save the world
